[QUESTION]

What is the Auxiliary Temperature sensor, and how should I install it?

[ANSWER] The intended purpose of this sensor is for use as an additional point of temperature comparison or to be usedas some other form of temperature reference studies.

The Auxiliary Temperature probe is the 15’ long gray cable. It connects to a port on the back on the back of the Master Control Unit (aka Datalogger). The opposite end has black heat shrink tubing and no connector. The electronic temperature sensor is on this end.

The long cable connected to the sensor allows great flexibility when choosing a location. Some interesting examples of use:

  • The US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD has an Aux. Temp. probe in the Chesapeake Bay to monitor water temperatures.
  • Several ski resorts have set multiple probes at different altitudeson their ski slopes to monitor outdoor temperatures at differing altitudes along the slope.
  • Classroom "incubator" temperature monitoring, also heat/air conditioning efficiency studies.
  • If a fault occurs in the cable, the temperature on the display will read -45 degrees (pre-1997 models) or -100 degrees ('97 and later). The same reading will show up if the cable is severed or disconnected. A constant reading of 100 or higher indicates a short circuit has been detected. This might have been caused by the cable being crushed.
