[QUESTION]

The wind speeds on my AWS system are consistently lower than those reported from the airports on TV weather reports. Is something wrong with my system?

[ANSWER] Not likely. AWS’ systems measure wind speeds very accurately. In typical installations AWS systems are installed in neighborhoods and are influenced by the local terrain. Airport weather stations are typically mounted in the middle of very large open fields (airfields) with terrain features and tree lines miles away. The airport sensors are also mounted 30’ above the ground. In these cases the airport wind speeds are typically higher than those indicated by your AWS system. The AWS system is a true representation of local wind conditions.

AWS systems have been tested at National Weather Service test facilities and wind tunnels with excellent accuracy. AWS also has systems installed at airports and winds speeds are typically higher than neighborhood weather conditions, as expected.
