[QUESTION]

My modem is not answering. What do I do?

[ANSWER]
  • Turn the modem’s power off for 30 seconds and then turn it back on. The following lights should be lit on the front panel: AA, TR, MR, HS (AA, CS, TR, MR on newer models).

  • Using another phone line, try dialing into the station’s modem phone number. If you hear the modem answer with a high-pitched tone, call AWS Tech Support. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.

  • Check to see if the fuse in your telephone line surge protector has blown. You can find the surge protector by following the phone line out of the back of modem. Unplug this end of the phone line from the surge protector and plug it directly into the wall socket.

  • Try dialing into the modem access number with a normal phone. If you can now hear the high-pitched tone, your surge protector fuse has blown and you need to purchase a new surge protector for your phone line. You can buy a multi-outlet power strip with a built-in phone line surge protector for about $15 at almost any discount or electronics store. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.

  • Determine if the phone line is functioning properly. Plug a normal voice telephone into the wall socket for the modem line. Try calling the modem access number from another phone line and try using the line as a voice line.

  • If the phone rings and you are able to speak with someone over the line, then your modem is probably defective - Contact AWS Tech Support.

  • If the phone does not ring, there is a problem with your modem access line and you need to contact your local telephone company.
