What is a firewall, and how can I tell if we have one?

A Firewall is a computer in between your workstation computer and the Internet. All Internet traffic from and to your school goes through the Firewall. Therefore, it can be used to filter traffic, and prevent outsiders from infiltrating the school's network. Sometimes Firewalls are also used to limit network traffic coming from inside the school as well, restricting what a workstation can do on the Internet.

A Proxy Server is a more complicated type of firewall.
