[QUESTION]

What can you tell me about the instrument mast?

[ANSWER] AWS recommends the use of 1" rigid electrical conduit. 1" rigid conduit has an inner diameter of 1" and an outside diameter of 1.25". Be sure not to use any mast with an outer diameter greater than 1.25".

Your instrument mast should extend about 10 feet above the sectionof roof where it is being mounted. Since most masts are mounted to the side of the building you will require about 15 feet of mast (5 feet is used for mounting to the side of the building).

If the mast is being mounted on the top of the roof using a non-penetrating stand alone roof mount, then it must be at least 10 feet above the roof.

Note that if there is a parapet or wall that extends above the roofline, the 10 feet should be above the top of this obstruction. It is important that the instruments have a good exposure above the roof, so that they may provide the most accurate readings.

You may also use two sections of mast to achieve the typical 15 feet total length required. In such cases a 5 feet section of larger diameter pipe is used to mount to the building. A ten foot (10 feet) section of 1 inch rigid conduit can then be inserted and secured into the 5 feet section (be sure to secure with at least 2 bolts). When selecting the mast diameters make sure that the larger section will fit into you mounting brackets and the smaller section is sized for the weather sensors (1.25 inch outer diameter Max).

The installation manual shipped with your system (in the large 3 ring binder) contains detailed information on mounting brackets, installation specs, etc.
