Press ReleasesPress > September 23, 2005 Release Alden Middle School Kicks Off The School Year Targeting New Goals with WeatherBug Achieve Germantown, MD, – September 23, 2005 – WeatherBug, the leading provider of live, local weather information services, today announced Alden Middle School, in Alden, NY, joins the elite list of schools to integrate the country’s only live, local weather conditions into its curriculum with WeatherBug Achieve. Students in grades six through eight will learn science, math, geography and technology through WeatherBug Achieve’s award-winning interactive lessons, which align with state education standards. The WeatherBug Network encompasses over 8,000 WeatherBug Tracking Stations and more than 1,000 cameras across the U.S., primarily based at schools and public safety facilities. The data from these stations is used by the National Weather Service, local broadcaster WIVB-TV (Channel 4) in Buffalo NY, local government agencies, consumers, teachers and their students. “The students and teachers are excited to work with WeatherBug Achieve, especially now as hurricane season picks up,” said Sandy Gauthier 7th and 8th grade teacher and lead on the WeatherBug Achieve project. “As the students walk in the classroom in the morning, the first thing they do is automatically check the weather on a PC monitor to monitor WeatherBug conditions. Many students have also downloaded the consumer product to their home computers. Who knows? We might have some budding meteorologists in Alden!” “It's another fantastic example of how this benefits so many...from the public to private sector, including today's youth who can learn about and focus on rapidly changing weather conditions live at their own school,” said Mary Beth Wrobel, WIVB-TV 4 Buffalo Meteorologist. WeatherBug Achieve brings live conditions into the classroom with a tool that is fun and easy for teachers and students, at all levels. The data is unique, as it is relative to the school and features current, local weather conditions right in their neighborhood and across the country. Under this innovative, hands-on program, student interest levels and scores consistently rise along with student and teacher morale. Teachers and administrators credit the program for adding tremendous value to their curriculum and boosting student self-confidence. “In the 2004-2005 school year more than 250,000 students and teachers logged in to WeatherBug Achieve to learn with real, live data and interactive lessons where students experienced hands-on learning,” said Bob Onsi, director and general manager of WeatherBug Achieve. “We are excited to add Alden Middle School to our community of schools and look forward to working with them on enhancing their teaching experience with WeatherBug Achieve.” About WeatherBug®WeatherBug (www.weatherbug.com) ensures that individuals, schools, businesses and communities always get the most precise live weather conditions, the most relevant reports, and the earliest weather warnings to safeguard their property and their lives.
