Loudoun County, Va – Loudoun County's 72 public schools have implemented a severe weather-alerting service from WeatherBug® Professional and Sprint (NYSE:S). The location-based system, WeatherBug Protect, is available on Sprint phones and is designed to enhance student and staff safety throughout the school day and at outdoor events during the afternoon and evening.

Loudoun County Public Schools are the first in the Mid-Atlantic region to implement WeatherBug Protect. More than 160 Sprint phones outfitted with WeatherBug Protect will be distributed among faculty and athletic directors at every high, middle and elementary school across the county. In addition, every principal will receive WeatherBug Protect alerts via their Blackberry device.

Based on predefined parameters, any phone within a six mile radius of a severe threat will receive alerts from the WeatherBug Protect system. Custom alerts from the WeatherBug Network such as heat index, lightning detection warnings, wind gusts, as well as all the standard severe weather alerts issued from the National Weather Service (NWS) are sent to the Sprint GPS-enabled phones. Additionally, during an outdoor activity for instance, faculty and staff carrying the Sprint phones can confirm they have received notification of the severe weather-related event while moving the students to safety.

Broward County Schools in South Florida have relied on WeatherBug Protect for more than a year and have made critical decisions such as delaying school dismissal due to tornado warnings. Sprint and WeatherBug also have delivered this system to the National Football League (NFL). The NFL uses Sprint's GPS-enabled phones equipped with WeatherBug Protect to ensure the safety of its players and spectators during games.
